Cicero, the great Roman philosopher, said that the crucifixion was the most cruel and disgusting punishment.  Today, we have somehow lost the horrific, demeaning reality of this event.   Back in the day, no Roman citizen could be crucified.  It was used as a tool by the Romans to show what could and would happen to anyone who tried to disrupt the Roman empire.  Keep this in mind while we revisit God’s plan.  What better way to demonstrate God’s great love for His creation than by suffering the pain of the Cross?  Through the crucifixion, God took our place out of His own choice.  He paid the price for our redemption, for your redemption.  Christ died for our sins, once and for all, for the righteous and the unrighteous… to bring you to God.  Jesus was the righteous sacrifice, while we remain the unrighteous and undeserving.  

In 1 Peter 2:24, Peter wrote, “He himself bore our sins our sins in his body on the Cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”  Peter wrote these words having first-hand knowledge of Jesus.  Peter hadn’t been told that he would deny Christ three times before he was busted by Christ himself.  Yet later, he received forgiveness from the resurrected Christ.  For him to say in essence that Christ died to bring us to God acknowledges the fact that we have written ourselves away from our perfect relationship with God.  As the prophet Isaiah put it (59:2), “Your iniquities have separated you from your God.  Your sins have hidden his face from you.”  The universal human problem is sin.  We are unrighteous.  Christ born without sin was a sacrifice needed to fulfil the need of redemption.  Christ was your payment into Heave, so to speak.  

Even in today’s world, if you commit an offense, you have to do the time for your crime.  Jesus submitted Himself for you so that you no longer need to do the time.  Christ died for your sins, once and for all.  Note the words for all.  Ephesians 2:8-10, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  Salvation is a gift from God, brought forth by the crucifixion of Jesus.   
There is nothing that you could have done that could separate you from the love of God.  It was God’s great love for you that kept Him on the Cross.  He could have removed Himself from the horrible torment, but He chose to stay nailed to the Cross… because of His great love for you.
